About Me

My name is Laura Renfroe, and I am a journalist for Hatchie Headlines at Pelahatchie High School.

If you would have told me three years ago I would hold six nationwide journalism recognitions and two state awards over the course of two years, I probably wouldn't have believed you. The opportunity to interview award-winning interviewers and authors? Simply unreal.

I truly never thought I would get this far when I spontaneously joined the Introduction to Journalism course my freshman year.

Today, I am beyond grateful for my journalism instructor Mrs. Laura Grice for opening my eyes to a new world, one that provides me endless pride and passion, and for allowing me a creative freedom to write about what makes me happy.

Writing now extends far beyond the sloppy short stories I wrote as a child. Journalism has become a passion, a career opportunity, and a way for me to connect with the world, the entertainment industry, and my community. My communication skills as well as confidence in myself have improved. But perhaps most importantly, journalism has taught me to have a voice. It has taught me that no matter how far-out it may sound or how hard society tries to push you in a different direction, your dream and your voice matter

I am filled with so much pride and gratitude to have gotten this far as a high school journalist from small-town Pelahatchie, and I will strive to extend my reach even farther as I chase my dreams. I will never give up running toward the future I want for myself.

Best of SNO is an elite website created by the School Newspapers Online (SNO) Distinguished Sites recognition process. Only the top works of SNO network student journalists are selected to be honored on Best of SNO. Only 10 percent of the 100-200 submissions a day are recognized. The following six articles of mine were published on Best of SNO for the 2019-2020, 2020-2021 school years.

The Mississippi Scholastic Press Association was established in 1947 with the continuous goal in "helping Mississippi Students tell their stories." At the 2019 MSPA Spring Convention, my article "Novel Captivates Teens with Nail-Biting, Action-Filled Heist" was selected for the Best of MS - Newspaper Awards as a finalist for Best Review.

At the 2020 MSPA Spring Convention, I was recognized as an All-Mississippi Honoree among 12 other student journalists. I was the only sophomore among a group of seniors to receive this award. Submissions were evaluated by a judging team to determine those state journalists who represented the "finest examples of high school journalists currently enrolled in Mississippi high schools."
