LEADERSHIP & TEAM

BUILDING

As an experienced and knowledgeable high school journalist, I feel obliged to use my passion as an influence to others and to help provide fresh ideas to my team. Leading by reputation is a powerful thing, one that comes with both pride and pressure. Journalism has taught me to be a leader in several different ways, whether it be breaking out of my shell, taking initiative, or leading by example.

Breaking Out of My Shell

I have always been the introverted, shy student ever since kindergarten. I've found it hard to verbally communicate my ideas and thoughts for as long as I can remember. Entering journalism gave me an outlet to have a voice. It taught me to ask for ideas from others, collect interviews, and to reach out to help.

Taking Initiative

Journalism also pushed me to take initiative. I took the further step this year to contact many entertainment authors and journalists and request interviews. This initiative reaped quite a few professional insights to my articles. Journalism encourages me to be proactive and take chances.

Leading by Example

The phrase "actions speak louder than words" always confused me until recently. I have learned through journalism that sometimes your boldest leaders are the most soft-spoken. I have been a leader for my team through example. I strive to be dedicated, on time, and always ready to create new stories, an attitude that I hope carries through to my fellow student journalists.

I serve as the editor for our school newspaper with the goal to ensure quality standards to our program. Along with being a leader in my journalism class, I am also Vice-President of Pelahatchie's Senior Beta Club. Taking up these leadership positions in my school has allowed me to grow both personally and socially.
